When I launched Sister Sister, my first collection of rings was a tribute to some of my sister Ellen’s closest friends and loved ones. Over the years, I’ve deepened my storytelling, sharing the inspirations behind each design more fully. This year, I’m revisiting those original pieces to honor the stories that sparked it all.
I want to begin with Pia, Ellen’s best friend from college. They became roommates in their sophomore year, and later on, coworkers—sharing moments and sneaking selfies together in the office bathroom. Their inseparable bond inspired our 14k gold chain ring.
Pia kindly shared her story with us, reflecting on her background, her current journey, what Ellen meant to her, and the legacy Ellen left behind. I am grateful for these friends who loved Ellen and continue to keep her memory alive.
Share a Little About Your Background
Pia: I was born in Lima, Peru and moved to the US when I was 8 years old. We moved to Quakertown, PA and then I went to PSU for college. I am who I am because of my grandparents, parents, and family in general. Most importantly, my parents gave up everything they knew to move to the US and provide my brother and I a better life. For that I am forever thankful.
What are you up to these days?
Pia: These days I stay at home with my two children: Sofia (2 yo) and Leo (8 months)
What is one of your favorite memories of Ellen?
Pia: One time she made me and my husband sign up for a 5k through a winery, with her and her fiancé, knowing that I hated to run. She never mentioned it was rolling hills, and once it started her and my husband ditched me because they were both super competitive and she actually liked to run. Her fiancé stayed with me for a little because he felt bad for me but he knew he had to ditch me too. Little did they know I finished before them. I found a shortcut and took it and waited for them at the finish line- well rested. I’ll never forget her face! She was shocked and yelled, “YOU CHEATED!!!” And I did, and was not ashamed of it. All three of them received a medal and I didn’t – she never let me live that one down.
What is one of the things you loved most about Ellen?
Pia: Her laugh, it was very contagious and it lit up the room. She loved to make fun of people in a loving way and it was just so easy to be around her. She was truly special.
How did losing Ellen impact who you are today?
Pia: I live every day intentionally. I’m grateful for every minute that I have with my children, husband, parents, family, and friends. I’ve become more sensitive to others, even strangers. You never know what someone is struggling with so being more aware and kind in general.
If you could tell people one thing about Ellen, what would it be?
Pia: How special she was to me, and my life. She was an unconditional friend who was there for everyone, not only family, but friends too. I was very lucky to have had her as my best friend. Some day I’ll tell my children about Aunt Ellen, and I truly hope they find a friend like her to have in their lives.
